Task 1 Written Research of Classic and Contemporary Platform Games

Sonic The Hedgehog: The aim of the game is for the player to embark on a quest to defeat the evil scientist Dr Robotnik and release the animals that he has trapped inside his evil minions.

the game has many levels easy and hard and the player will encounter many robot enemies known as “badnik” which will get harder and harder to defeat as you progress through the many levels the game has in store for you, The gameplay revolves around the high speed running ability of sonic the hedgehog which you can use to speed through levels also incorporating springs, slopes and loops.

Along the way you can collect coins which you will lose I you get hit by enemies’ coins.  Coins are important because if you collect 100 of them you will be given and extra life also if you have collected at least 1 coin it acts as a shield so that when you collide with an enemy or a spike you won’t die but they will be scattered and will disappear in a few seconds. If all your lives are gone you will have to start the Act again.

In the start you will be given 3 lives and if you use all three of it Game Over and you will have to start the game over again.

You also have to avoid spikes, getting crushed by walls and platforms and drowning, sonic can curl into a ball and rapidly spin to destroy enemies and obstacles you can do this by jumping or rolling in the ground. For an 8 bit game the art is quite good, the characters and the environment are quite detailed, for the trees and the sky they use nice bright colours but this could change entirely depending on what environment the level is in. The environment won’t change unless the level has parts or in this games case ‘acts’ but more obstacles will be added onto it.

This is what I meant when I said that the levels could be different but if it’s in parts it will have the same environment or scenery just with added obstacles and upgraded terrain.

On the end of Green Hill Zone Act 3 you will have to defeat Dr Robotnik to get through to the next level.

If you take a hit from Dr Robotnik with the rings you collected it will protect you so you won't die but they will scatter faster and further to the point that you'll only get 1 ring out of the 96 you collected.

For the controls you use the left or right arrow to go forwards and backwards and to jump you can press either A, B or C. The movements within the game are quite sensitive but not too sensitive.
This game in my opinion is very fun because it’s one of those timeless classics games but I’ve noticed that it’s also a bit strategic because for most of the levels you have to look for ways that you can get on a platform and also timing is a key element to completing the game because you have to time when and where you’re going to jump.

I’m going to guess that the age rating for this game would be 6+ because even though it’s quite entertaining for kids to see a hedgehog rolling around defeating bad guys it still includes some violence in it.

These images are both from google images.
This image shows a part of the environment from Green Hill Zone Act 1.

This image is of the first acts map and it shows you what you have to go through to get through to the end of act 1.

Happy wheels: happy wheels doesn’t really have an aim on its own because this has a lot of custom games that you can choose from one’s that people have made and you can choose from hundreds of them but you can also make your own obstacle course for people to enjoy and have fun with but to save the one you created you will have to create an account but you can still make but other people won’t be able to play it.

There are 6 options you can choose from, on the ‘Browse level’ option that’s where you’ll find custom made levels made by people from.

When you click on the play option it will take you to this page which will show you the main game modes that have been created for the game and you can see that on the right hand side it tells you a little story or description about the level.

When you choose a level which in this case i chose Pokemon Training, you will be given 11 unique character choices to play with. These choices don't apply for all of the levels like for example 'The Seginators' level because when you click on the play button it will jump right into the game without giving you any choice of character to play as but they will have a character already chosen for you.

Here is what the beginning of 'The Seginators' level looks like and as you can see this is the default character that they've chosen for you.
He is known as 'The Segway Guy'.

As you can see on the bottom it shows the player the controls and what kind of action they do.

The art work on this game whichever level you choose it will always be made by the people who created that level, creating levels isn't just putting obstacles wherever you please you also have to design and create a background for it some levels may just have blank white background but when your creating your own level the design and the details of the items the game gives to use for the obstacles makes up for your bad drawing skills.
The background doesn't really matter as long as the mechanics of the custom game mode you created runs smoothly.

I think that the age rating for this game should be under 12 because it's quite gruesome when your character dies because there's a lot of blood and it's actually quite detailed when you die because you can see brains, intestines and bones.

The Pokemon Training mode personally caught my attention. It starts of with this it has a character statue pointing towards the open passage and i also has a text sayin 'I choose you!' in capitals. For this level i chose to play as a character called segway guy.

Once you go through the open passage you fin yourself in a with two other characters one is a drawing of Pikachu and the other a man, the background is just plain white with two storm clouds.

A couple of seconds after you enter thunder bolts come out of the storm clouds, if you get hit by one you will die like the guy standing there.

There's also and alternative, if you're lucky enough to not get impaled by the thunder bolts while under the storm clouds you can get stuck between them. .

You can get out of it if you push the thunder bolt hard enough that it slides and falls through the passage.

While thats a convenient idea when you fall through you will find yourself trapped again.

You can use the same technique you used for pushing it out the way the first time but it will be much harder and you will end up like this.

If you've successfully dodged the thunder bolts and avoid being trapped you will be able to go through to the next floor after a new passage opens to it.

If you go down you will see a corridor.

That corridor leads to this scene, the big letters say 'Beefcake' and a second after you get to the end of those letters the Machoke brutally punches the couple and they end up in pieces.

If you keep going from here you will see a door in which if you push will lift up allowing you to enter the next passage.

If you get to the end of the passage you will see this message, saying 'Jiggly Puff is coming'.

When you go down Jiggly Puff will fall from the ceiling and if your not careful she could crush you.
When you go down you will immediately see an open passage. that leads to the next floor.

Once you go through it will take you to this floor which says 'Self Destruct' and when you touch the bottom of the passage it will automatically count down from three and if you don't get through the next passage this will happen to you.

If you get through to the next passage safely you go straight and you will see these slopes leading you to this next passage. This time when you touch the door it slides downwards.

When you go through you will find yourself in an empty room but after a couple of seconds, SURPRISE! pedobear descends down in the empty room but a few seconds after he disappears and text in capital letters appears saying 'TOO OLD DO NOT WANT!'.

As you go down through the passage this message shows up. It says 'Final Showdown' in capital letters.

Once you go down you will end up on this floor and you will see that there's a door behind you and if you run into it it will open.

If you go through that it will lead into this room which says 'Enable Deflector Shield' which sounds useful.

If you go back from where you went in and enter the room that ahead of where you landed from the slopey platforms you will see 'Psychic Powers' in capitals and MewTwo at the end of it, but be careful because use kids to shoot at you with his psychic powers but since you enabled the deflector shield you won't get hit by them.

If you go through the door right behind you i will take you to this floor.

If you keep going through it you will see a flag and if you go it you will officially completed the level.

When you have completed it the game will congratulate you with a Victory sign and under it is your time it took you to complete it, the name of the level under, who it was made by, a sentence saying 'Hey! please rate this level' and the over all rating it has it also shows you options of what you want to do after, it starts with.

My overall conclusion of this game is that it's fun because you get to choose from hundreds of levels created by people meaning you will never get bored also i think that this game helps fuel peoples imaginations because you can create basically everything and anything that pops into your mind.
